Pooch Palace

February 14th, 2009 by Simon Salt

Canis Resort, the first luxury hotel for dogs, opened for business at the end of December 2008 in Freising, Germany, just north of Munich. The doggie resort can accommodate up to 45 pooches in nine heated dog lodges. Each lodge is roomy enough for five dogs and has a yacht-quality resin floor and a private exercise field. Trained dog sitters offer a full range of services at the resort, including grooming, training, health care and exercise, and more.

Gourmet food is available and extra care is taken to make the resort seem as little like a dog kennel as possible. “Dog owners often have a bad conscience when they leave their dogs to be looked after because the places feel like kennels,” said Thomas Gerteis, the co-managing director. “We have a 24-hour, seven-day check-in service,” Sabine Gerteis said. “If the dog wants to be petted, the dog-sitter is right there for him.”
