Dior Spring Collection
February 9th, 2009 by Simon Salt
Dior’s Spring 2009 collection is all about fitted bodices, wide open necklines, and shapes reminiscent of old Dutch Master paintings. The line has a luminous, rich quality that is completely out of sync with the current global economic tone, yet is somehow all the more breathtaking because of the contrast. The colors are muted yet luxe with lots of gold, silver, deep roses, and rich blues that suggest the decoration on fine Dutch china. While other couture houses brought out chiffon and gauze that recalled the Pre-Raphaelite fascination with the goddess, Dior went for more structure and form fitting designs, even featuring lace up bodices on some of the dresses and gowns.
The ball gowns were especially breathtaking with one gown containing 2,500 meters of tightly packed lace ribbon that was cut away to reveal a gorgeous blue delft print on crisp white. Dior rarely misses a beat: The move toward structure and luxury is sure to be welcomed in a world in which both are currently in woefully short supply.
