Cervelt Luxury Fabric
March 30th, 2009 by Simon Salt
Cervelt is a luxury fiber made from the under-down of the New Zealand deer. A de-hairing company based in New Zealand, Douglas Creek, has spent five years perfecting the system that collects and chooses only the finest hairs from each deer’s coat. The results are a mere 40 grams of the fiber that is rarer, finer than cashmere or silk. Douglas Creek’s Cervelt “can rule market prices of tens of thousands of dollars per [kilogram] internationally.” A monopoly by the red deer farming community secures a measure of stability for the company thus allowing it to ask a maximum price per kilogram.
Basically, Cervelt is 200 times more rare than gold, 3,000 times rarer than cashmere and more than twice as rare as diamonds. Cervelt is heralded as being a outstandingly soft fabric, with the sheen of silk and the delicacy of cashmere. It wicks moisture and breathes well providing a lightweight, clean feel. Marketable for buyers and appealing to designers because Cervelt can be dyed a variety of colors.
