The House of Cartier was founded in 1847 by and Louis-Francois Cartier and was originally a jewelry boutique. The first wrist watch made by Cartier was the Santos Dumont, named after a famous Brazilian Aviator in 1904. Shortly afterward, Cartier began to create jewel – encrusted watches, and in 1917 the famous Cartier Tank watch was introduced to rave reviews and enormous popular demand. Long regarded as the single most important and influential watch design of the 20th century, the distinctive Cartier Tank watch was designed in tribute to the Allied Tank commanders who helped defend France during World War I.
Today Cartier watches are Swiss-made with a signature French Cartier style. The Cartier Tank Solo watch is still manufactured today with prices starting at just under $1,600. An original 1917 Cartier watch could easily set you back tens of thousands of dollars, if you could get the owner to part with it at all.
