Be Eco Chic - Fashion Week New York
February 15th, 2009 by Simon Salt
This year’s Fashion Week in New York City saw some sad things happen (like Betsy Johnson and a few other major designers pulling out at the last minute due to declining sales in 2008), but it also saw some new, fun things happen, like the ’Be Eco Chic’ fashion event and party. Be Eco Chic was created to promote awareness of recycled fabric, green materials, and ecologically sound cosmetics and manufacturing processes, and to make the point that haute couture and environmentally conscious choices do not have to be mutually exclusive. High end fashion designers trotted out their best eco-chic offerings.
Linda Loudermilk presented a dress made of seaweed, Vena Cava used recycled crepe de chine with found hardware, and super model Alek Wek premiered her new eco bag collection. Designer Carmen Marc Valvo’s 100% silk chiffon evening dress printed with low impact dyes – crafted out of sustainable fabrics—was a high point. Who says the Green movement is all about gauze and Birkenstocks?
